FROM THE SUN TO THE SEA
“From the Sun to the Sea” was the second song I ever wrote.
At the time, I was still figuring out almost everything.
A close friend had died by suicide in January 2025, and around the same time I bought my first MIDI controller. I didn't really know what I was doing with it yet. I was learning how synthesizers worked, experimenting with sounds, and slowly beginning to understand how all of these separate pieces could become a song.
I was also learning Logic Pro as I went.
Because of that, “From the Sun to the Sea” took me much longer to finish than songs usually do now. I didn't have a workflow. I didn't really have a sound. Every part of the process involved figuring something out for the first time.
Prophets of the Cosmic Darkness barely had an identity yet.
I was just making something.
Looking back, that's probably what I like most about the song now. I can hear someone learning. I can hear the beginning of Prophets of the Cosmic Darkness before I really knew what Prophets of the Cosmic Darkness was going to be.
HOW THE WORDS HAPPENED
I didn't start “From the Sun to the Sea” with a story I wanted to tell.
That's actually pretty normal for me.
A lot of the time, lyrics begin with me singing nonsense into a microphone. I'll hum a melody, mumble sounds and repeat things until an actual word or phrase appears. If something catches my attention, I follow it.
The one thing I knew with this song was that I didn't want it to feel negative.
Eventually, “from the sun to the sea” came out.
We live in South Florida, where sunlight and water are just part of everyday life. The phrase felt familiar. I liked the way it sounded and the image it created, so I kept coming back to it.
Eventually, the rest of the song started forming around those words.
The lyrics are simple.
I used to feel like I needed to apologize for things like that. I don't anymore.
A song doesn't become better just because you find a more complicated way to say something. Sometimes the simplest version is the right one.
And what I was trying to say with this song was actually very simple.
I'm lucky.
IT'S ABOUT MY HUSBAND
More specifically, the song is about my husband.
I've had difficult periods in my life, but somewhere along the way things changed. I met someone. We built a life together. And without really planning it, he became the quiet center of a lot of the music I write.
“From the Sun to the Sea” is one of the clearest examples.
He supported me through a major transition from Navy public affairs into business systems. He was there when I decided years later that I wanted to make music seriously again. And he's been there through the ridiculous number of late nights I've spent sitting in front of a computer obsessing over sounds and trying to figure out what I'm doing.
He encourages it.
That's not a small thing.
So when I sing, “How lucky I am to be by your side,” there isn't really a metaphor to unpack.
I mean it.
That's the song.
It's about looking at the person next to you, looking at the life you've somehow built together, and realizing that despite everything that happened before it, you're exactly where you want to be.
Sometimes songs start with a grand idea.
This one didn't.
It started while I was learning how to make music and eventually became one of the simplest things I could say:
I'm lucky to be here.
And I'm lucky to be by his side.
