DIVINE

“Divine” came together faster than any song I had written up to that point.

I started it on May 3, 2026 and finished it on May 8. Five days from the first sounds to the final version.

That was unusual for me.

I tend to spend a lot of time second-guessing arrangements, adding layers, removing them, changing transitions, and convincing myself something needs one more thing.

This song didn't really let me do that.

I started by messing around with synth sounds and found the intro melody. Once I had that, the rhythm and bass followed pretty naturally.

The main synth ended up carrying most of the song, so I deliberately kept the arrangement more open than some of my earlier work.

The tempo changed quite a bit while I was writing it. It started around 130 BPM and eventually ended up closer to 160.

Normally that sounds like it should make a song feel frantic, but “Divine” still felt strangely soft to me.

I also didn't want a standard four-on-the-floor beat.

The bass line repeats through the entire song without really changing. I considered rewriting it a few times, but every variation made the song feel weaker.

So I left it alone.

That was probably one of the more useful things I learned from making this song: sometimes repetition is doing exactly what it needs to do.

THE MEANING

The lyrics started as fragments.

I wasn't sitting down with a concept and trying to tell a specific story from beginning to end.

I was writing lines that felt right with the music, and eventually I realized they were all circling around the same thing.

Falling apart in front of someone and trusting that they aren't going anywhere.

“If I fall apart

I know you won't be far”

That's probably the simplest version of what the song means to me.

There's a contradiction running through the song between feeling completely fine and clearly not being fine at all.

“I'm feeling fine

I'm feeling divine”

Then later:

“I'm feeling fine

I'm falling apart

I'm feeling divine”

I like that contradiction because it feels pretty human.

You can be happy and overwhelmed at the same time.

You can feel safe and still be struggling.

You can love somebody deeply without suddenly becoming a perfectly stable person.

The line that probably says the most is:

“That's okay you have the pieces to my heart.”

That's where the song really landed for me.

It's not about somebody fixing you.

It's about trusting somebody enough to let them see the parts that aren't put together perfectly.

THE SOUND

“Divine” was also one of the songs where I started realizing I wasn't particularly interested in forcing Prophets of the Cosmic Darkness into one genre.

This one sits much closer to dream pop and indie pop than some of the earlier material.

The vocals were a big part of that.

I started with the vocal chain I used on “From the Sun to the Sea,” then changed it pretty heavily with more chorus and softer processing.

I wanted the vocals to feel like part of the music instead of something sitting on top of it.

The whole song ended up teaching me a lot about restraint.

I didn't need another synth.

I didn't need another transition.

I didn't need to make the bass line more complicated just because it repeated.

I just needed to stop touching it.

Sometimes that's the hardest part.

Lyrics

I won’t run away

I know you wanna stay

If I fall apart

I know you won’t be far

Let’s just go astray

Get lost along the way

I love you to death

This truth from my own breath

I wonder why refrain

When our hearts feel the strain

I think I’m falling apart

But I have you in my heart

I love you this way

And I know you feel the same

I love you to death

This truth from my own breath

I’m feeling fine

I’m feeling divine

La La La La La La La

I’m feeling fine

I’m feeling divine

La La La La La La La

Did I pass the test?

To forgive is not to forget

Oh no, I’ve fallen apart

That’s okay you have the pieces to my heart

I love you to death

This truth from my own breath

I’m feeling fine

I’m falling apart

I’m feeling divine

Sing it with me now

La La La La La La La

I’m feeling fine

I’m falling apart

I’m feeling divine

Sing it with me now

La La La La La La La

I love you to death

Sing it loud and sing it clear it’s

La La La La La La La
