BEYOND THE SAND AND THE FEVER DREAMS

“Beyond the Sand and the Fever Dreams” was the sixth song I wrote for Prophets of the Cosmic Darkness.

By the time I got to this one, I was starting to feel more comfortable inside Logic Pro. I was still learning constantly, but I wasn't fighting the software as much anymore.

Around the same time, I had also started learning Serum.

At first, Serum was overwhelming. There are so many waveforms, parameters, modulation options, and ways to completely destroy a sound that I didn't really know where to begin.

So I did the obvious thing.

I started turning knobs.

LEARNING BY MAKING A MESS

I wasn't trying to design the perfect sound.

I was experimenting.

I would move oscillators around, change wave shapes, mess with modulation, and listen to what happened. Most of it probably wasn't useful, but that wasn't really the point.

I was learning how the instrument responded.

That process eventually started feeding into the song.

The track itself came together pretty quickly, probably within a week or two.

Once I had the music finished, I remember listening to it constantly while mowing the lawn.

For whatever reason, that's where a lot of my early songs got tested.

And at first, I wasn't even sure I liked this one that much.

It wasn't bad. I just hadn't connected with it yet.

That changed when the lyrics found their place.

WHAT THE SONG IS ABOUT

“Beyond the Sand and the Fever Dreams” is about the idea of leaving this world with my husband.

That sounds darker written down than it feels to me.

The song isn't really about wanting to die.

It's about the strange comfort in imagining that, after building a life together, maybe neither of us has to face the very end completely alone.

There is something beautiful and awful about loving somebody enough that you eventually have to think about losing them.

The older I get, the more I realize that love comes with that built into it.

At some point, one of you may have to keep going without the other.

HEART OF GOLD

The part that affects me most is the ending:

“Leave me your heart of gold.”

That line still gets me.

If my husband is the one who goes first, I like the idea that some part of what made him who he is stays with me.

Not literally.

Just the things you absorb from another person after spending years together.

The way they make you think.

The things they taught you.

Their habits.

Their kindness.

Their sense of humor.

The small pieces of them that quietly become part of you.

That's what the “heart of gold” means to me.

It's asking someone not to completely disappear.

And when my time comes, wherever that is and whatever happens after, maybe we find each other again.

Beyond the sand and the fever dreams.

Lyrics

Silence falls across the room

Like a dream we're drifting through

Shadow bent and time is still

Falling off the walls and the lights are fading too

So be

With me

I'll take you where you wanna go

Beyond the sand and the fever dreams

They hide to seek

The vivid dreams

Oh, Heart of Gold

In the fever dream

They hide to seek

The vivid dreams

Oh, Heart of Gold

In the fever dream

When the lights begin to show

And our hearts are bleeding gold

We disappear in the brilliant light

Leave behind the flaws and all the doubt inside

So be

With me

I'll take you where you wanna go

Beyond the sand and the fever dreams

They hide to seek

The vivid dreams

Oh, Heart of Gold

In the fever dream

They hide to seek

The vivid dreams

Oh, Heart of Gold

In the fever dream

I said, Dance

Leave me

Your Heart of Gold

Your Heart of Gold

Don't leave me

Leave me

Your Heart of Gold

Your Heart of Gold

Don't leave me

Leave me

Your Heart of Gold

Your Heart of Gold

Don't leave me
