BEYOND THE SAND THE FEVER DREAMS was the sixth track I wrote for Album I.
This one came together quickly—within a week or two. By that point I was starting to find my sound, and I had become much more comfortable working inside Logic Pro. Around that time I had also started learning Serum, which at first felt overwhelming. It’s a powerful synth, and the number of waveforms and parameters you can manipulate can be a lot when you’re just starting out.
To get familiar with it, I did the simplest thing possible: I started turning knobs. I experimented with oscillators, wave shapes, and modulation without really worrying about the outcome. It was more about learning how the instrument responded.
Once the track was finished musically, I remember listening to it constantly while mowing the lawn. At the time, I wasn’t even sure I liked it that much. But over time the track grew on me.
What ultimately made me fall in love with it was when the lyrics finally found their place inside the music.
Meaning
Lyrically, this song explores the idea of wanting to leave the world together with my husband. It reflects on the bittersweet thought of our lives ending side by side—an ending that carries both love and sorrow.
The final section of the song always gets to me. When I sing, “Leave me your heart of gold, your heart of gold, don’t leave me,” it’s hard not to tear up.
That moment represents a quiet promise between us. If I’m the one left behind and he ascends before me, I want him to know how deeply he was loved. And when my time eventually comes, I’ll carry with me what I loved most about him—his heart of gold.
